Food is Fuel It’s Ontario’s peak growing season. Therefore, the opportunity, the urgency, to rescue fresh, nutritious food is growing fast.
Food for Life is the largest food rescue organization in Halton and Hamilton, operating since 1995. Above all, they collect surplus perishable food from retail and wholesale food suppliers, as well as grocery stores. Redistributing it across the region to various food banks and their own in-house food drive.
MISSION – Rescuing food. Impacting Lives.
VISION – For everyone to have access to healthy food.
Most importantly since their inception, they’ve rescued over 26 million pounds of food and are incredibly efficient with donation money. That is to say, creating approximately $7 worth of food for every $1 donated. Meanwhile they are also a sustainability-focused organization, with last year being a remarkable achievement in reducing the equivalent of 7 million KGs of greenhouse gases through the diversion of 4.9 million pounds of food. They warmly welcome small company teams to volunteer, offering a rewarding and enjoyable experience with multiple areas to contribute, such as food packing and cold room organizing.
Food for Life holds a unique niche among Canadian food relief charities in that they focus on redistributing fresh, nutritious food. Their clients tell them that they are often not able to afford fresh food and that having access to healthy food allows them to focus on obtaining other life essentials as they work towards no longer relying on food services.
